The Africa Feature Network is seeking public support for its 2027 school feeding campaign, which will provide meals to learners in vulnerable communities and expand access to menstrual hygiene products for schoolgirls.
The initiative, under the organisation’s #Miles4MealsAndDignityCampaign, is scheduled to launch in the second week of January 2027 at Nyamonye Integrated School in Siaya County.
The launch will provide meals to all 550 learners at the school, marking the beginning of a programme designed to support learners throughout the academic year.
Following the launch, the feeding programme will initially provide daily meals to 100 Early Childhood Development (ECD) learners. In the second term of the 2027 academic year, the organisation plans to extend the initiative to two additional schools in Western Kenya and the Coast region, targeting an additional 200 learners.
The campaign aims to provide 49,000 meals across the 2027 academic year, starting with 7,000 meals in Term One and expanding to 21,000 meals in each of the second and third terms.
The initiative comes amid continuing concerns about access to school meals in Kenya. A State Department for Basic Education performance report published on August 7, 2026, found that 8.1 million school-aged children lacked universal access to school meals. Of the country’s 10.7 million learners, only 2.65 million were consistently covered by the state-run school feeding infrastructure.
The report also highlighted a KES 4.8 billion funding gap, with the school feeding programme receiving KES 3 billion against an annual requirement of KES 7.8 billion.
The Africa Feature Network’s campaign will also address menstrual hygiene challenges that can affect girls’ participation in school. As part of the initiative, 300 girls will receive sanitary towels for one school term, with each girl receiving six packets, bringing the total distribution to 1,800 packets.
Before the distribution, the girls will participate in menstrual hygiene education sessions intended to provide information on menstrual health and hygiene.
The campaign will incorporate a kitchen gardening component under the Green Lab initiative, through which the organisation will help establish small garden plots at the participating school. The gardens will be used to grow vegetables and onions to supplement the school’s food supplies.
The campaign has a budget of KES 700,000 to cover the feeding programme, the launch-day meal, sanitary towels and kitchen gardens at Nyamonye Integrated School in Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County.
The organisation is inviting individuals, organisations and other well-wishers to contribute towards the initiative.
In a press release dated October 9, 2026, the organisation’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Peter Aowa, called on the public to support efforts to improve access to education through the feeding programme.
“Our focus is to leverage on the networks we have built over the past one year to help address systemic challenges with education as a key priority,” Aowa said.
He said the initiative forms part of a broader effort to improve school attendance among girls during menstruation and support learners from vulnerable families.
To facilitate fundraising, The Africa Feature Network has designed hard-copy vouchers with unique card numbers.
Each voucher carries a unique reference code and a QR code linking directly to this campaign story, allowing supporters to verify the vouchers and the fundraising appeal.
The vouchers have a combined face value of KES 600,000. The organisation is using the register to provide a reference for contributions and encourage public participation in the campaign.
The 100 vouchers valued at KES 1,000 each are identified by the following codes:
